HUDSON Mixed Breed (Medium) Young Male in New York, New York

My story
Meet Hudson3 years old55 lbsMilford, CTHudson came into the shelter in New York City as a stray who was brought in by the police. He endeared himself to the volunteers during the limited time he was able to spend with them, but he had extreme difficulty coping with the stress of the shelter environment and being in a kennel. We can't say for certain what occurred in his previous life to cause him such anxiety and fear of being "behind bars", but we think he may have been teased and/or tormented while being locked up in a cage or other small area. One thing we do know.... he definitely wasn't treated very well. Humans have let this boy down big time. But according to the volunteers at the shelter, once he got to see the same faces over and over and spend time with them, they found Hudson to be very sweet and affection-seeking, often wanting to climb into their laps and soak up just that short time of being cuddled and loved. They also said he loved engaging in independent play with his toys. For the past several months, Hudson has been in a foster-training program where he is learning how a cherished pup and family member is to behave in a home environment. He's been doing great with his manners and learning commands, he's housebroken, and he's even come to learn that the crate does not need to be a scary place when you're in a real home and surrounded by people who love him and who he can trust. His foster parents are also working with him on his anxiety and reactivity towards strangers and other dogs.Hudson will do best in a single-pet home where his pet-parent(s) has experience working with a dog on its trust and fear issues, and where he will be able to continue working on overcoming his anxieties and related behaviors. He has shown that in the right environment, he wants to learn and he wants to please his trusted people! He just needs someone willing to give him the time and patience and skills he needs to keep working on being the best pup he can be! In order to achieve this, a suburban or sub-rural area would be the ideal environment for him to be able to focus on his own growth without the distractions of lots of strange people and other pets continuously passing by (as commonly found in urban or city setting).Hudson is a special boy who deserves all the good that life has to offer....he's just waiting for that special family who sees all the potential in him that is yet to be achieved. If Hudson's story is one that you can relate to and you are the special, patient, understanding pet-parent that he needs, please contact AmsterDog at info@amsterdog.org or complete our application at /application to get the process started.Hudson is neutered, microchipped, and up to date on shots. Thank you for caring about a pet in need!
