Noted for her Emmy Award winning role as the saucy southern belle, Blanche Devereux on the beloved series, GOLDEN GIRLS, Rue McClanahan has had a number of well-known starring roles in TV and on Broadway.
Her characters on Maude (also starring Golden Girls alumni, Bea Arthur) attracted much acclaim as did her contributions to the musicals, Wicked and Nunsense.
In addition to her work as an actress, McClanahan, a cancer survivor, speaks regularly for breast cancer awareness as well as prevention of cruelty to animals.
Her +330 page autobiography is a beautiful celebration of life from her birth in Healdton, Oklahoma, to her early years studying dance, to theater training at the University of Tulsa to her recent passing.
McClanahan died on June 3, 2010 in the New YorkPresbyterian Hospital after she suffered a stroke and subsequently a brain hemorrhage. She was 76 years old. She died with her son, Mark Bish, her sister and a nephew by her side.
